Most people see Memorial Day as the start of the summer season. Since many get that Monday off, your plan for this three-day weekend probably involves sleeping in, relaxing and kicking back with friends and family around the barbeque.
However, Memorial Day is actually a commemoration of the brave men and women serving in the U.S. military who gave their lives to ensure our nation’s freedom. While we hope you have fun this Memorial Day weekend, we also encourage you to reflect on the high price these individuals paid to keep our country safe.
5 Ways to Get out and Enjoy Your Memorial Day Weekend
Memorial Day always takes place the last Monday in May, making it the official kick-off of summer fun. That means this weekend is jam-packed with events designed to get you out and break free from the ho-hum. Don’t spend your three-day holiday holed up in your home. Spend some time with your fellow Sacromentites at one of these five, fun area events.
1. Check out Some Fuzzy, Adorable Farm Animals at the County Fair
If you’re looking for something to do with the fam, kick off your Memorial Day festivities at the traditional and affordable Sacramento County Fair. This family-friendly event has cuddly farm animals, carnival rides, yummy food and tons of free stuff to grab as you scope out the many booths. Take your kids for some pint-sized fun at the kid-zone or see how things were done in ye-olde times at the blacksmith demo.
2. Calling All Car Junkies
The annual Vettes and Vets Car Show allows both car aficionados and auto enthusiasts alike to come together to appreciate some first-rate vehicles. Cars, food, music — what could be better? Plus, the car show organizers take the time to commemorate the spirit of Memorial Day by honoring local veterans. The show kicks off with a color guard presenting the flag and colors during the national anthem. Proceeds from the event are donated to benefit the Veteran’s Resource Center.
3. Partake in Some High-Class BBQ
If hamburgers and hotdogs aren’t your speed, indulge your palate at Wise Villa Winery’s Great Memorial Day BBQ & Veteran Tribute. The mouthwatering, chef-prepared BBQ is paired perfectly with local wine and sangria. Plus, the winery honors the memory of our nation’s veterans with a touching tribute to these fallen heroes.
4. Run a Mile or More in Honor of Our Service Men and Women
If you’ve always wanted to be a part of an inaugural event, then you won’t want to miss Sacramento’s first ever Memorial Day 1 Mile, 5K & 10K. This event seeks to honor all those who have died while serving in our country’s armed forces. A portion of all proceeds earned will go to Operation Gratitude, an organization whose main goal is to meet the needs of our military and first responder communities and lift their spirits.
